Packaged vs. bulk fasteners: how to order the right quantity
Short answer: work out the pieces you need, then pick the pack that leaves the fewest spares. Boxes (often 100) suit small and mixed jobs; bulk packs suit production work on one size. They're separate SKUs — check the piece count on each.
Why bulk counts change
Bulk packs are filled by weight and size, so the piece count drops as the fastener gets bigger. In the Grade 5 hex cap screw family, a 1/4"-20 × 1/2" bulk pack (B075-305) holds 3,300 pieces while a 1/4"-20 × 2" (B075-316) holds 1,200, and a 7/8"-9 × 3" (B075-766) holds 50.
| You need | In 100-boxes | In a bulk pack |
|---|---|---|
| 250 × 1/4"-20 × 1/2" | 3 boxes (300 pieces) | 1 bulk pack of 3,300 — 3,050 spare |
| 2,400 × 1/4"-20 × 1/2" | 24 boxes (2,400 pieces) | 1 bulk pack of 3,300 — 900 spare |
The pack calculator on every product page does this for you, and the quote shows packs and pieces on every line. Packs are not split — if you need a part pack, put it in the quote notes and your branch will tell you what's possible.
Questions
Are packaged and bulk the same SKU?
No. They are separate SKUs (for example 075-305 for the box of 100 and B075-305 for the bulk pack of 3,300) because pricing and availability differ.
Can I buy a part box?
Packs are not split online. Add a note to your quote and your branch will confirm what is possible.
